Located at Narayan Peth, this is the 5th
Ganesha of honor in the city. The idol of lord Ganesha was installed by freedom
fighter Lokamanya Tilak himself in 1893. He started celebrating Ganeshotsav at his
house Kesariwada. He made it Sarvajanik Utsav (Open to public) from 1894 by forming
a Ganesh Mandal known as Kesariwada Ganapati Mandal. Within a decade 60-65 Mandals
were formed across the Pune.
A small attractive idol of lord Ganesha is placed in the mandal. Behind it there is a Gold-Plated Ganesha idol and bronze statue of Lokamanya Tilak. The mandal organizes shows of famous artists and the speeches of great people. Bharat Ratna Pundit Bhimsen Joshi performed for the first time in public at this place.
Kesariwada is the place where Lokamanya Tilak began publishing the nationalist newspapers – Kesari (Marathi Newspaper) & Maratha (English Newspaper). The wada was known as Tilak wada but later it became kesari wada as Kesari Newspaper became so popular. There is a museum in the Kesari wada where one can see the writing desk of Lokamanya, letters, documents and the 1st flag of India unfurled by Madame Cama.
The mandal has changed its route for the immersion procession. All the Ganeshas of honor go through Laxmi road but the mandal now goes through Tilak road to avoid the traffic congestion. The mandal organizes lectures of great personalities so visiting the mandal during Ganeshotsav is a must.
